I was in Scotland for about 6 months, so I understand the loneliness thing- and I had 3 kids and a husband to keep me company. But the Scots are fairly reserved, and (especially in the Highlands) slow to make friends with outsiders. I met people who had moved to the Highlands, and some of them still felt they weren't accepted even after living there for years (and that even applied to Scots who had moved to the Highlands from other areas of Scotland).

In the US we're fairly open in many places- especially places like NY and LA, where is doesn't matter where you're from, since most people are from somewhere else. It's weird to move somewhere where people really care where you're from.
