Group protests Ga. rain prayer

ATLANTA (AP) -- A secular group says it will protest Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue's planned prayer service intended to ask God for relief from the Southeastern drought.

The Atlanta Freethought Society says the rally violates the principle of separation of church and state.

Perdue's office announced Wednesday that it had sent invitations to leaders from several faiths for the service, set for Tuesday outside the state Capitol.

A spokesman for the secular group says Perdue wasn't elected as a preacher and "has no right to make a religious statement in behalf of Georgians."

The Southeast has been suffering from an intense drought in recent months that has threatened supplies of drinking water.

"A special task force in a Colorado city has recommended banning red and green lights at the Christmas holiday because they fall among the items that are too religious for the city to sponsor.
