Depending upon when you were in Berlin, you either saw the stark contrast between capitalism and socialism or you didn't. For a number of years after the wall came down (even in 1998) you could see the contrast. If you've been there more recently, you can't tell the difference between "East" and "West." Capeesh? Yes, I understand..........now let me explain some things to you. First off, this is the first time I have seen someone from the right admit that the former W. Germany was/is a capitalist country. Secondly, the DDR [E.Germany] was not a true socialistic country. Instead it was a satellite dictatorship with a somewhat socialist bent that fed resources back to the mother country. There was no way the DDR could ever look good so long as its dictators were beholden to Moscow. Unfortunately, the right predicates its entire hatred of socialism on this misrepresentation of what was really happening in the Soviet Union and its satellites performed. The reality is that the Soviet Union and E. Europe were a mismash of oligarchy, socialism, dicatorships, and communism.......and as it turns, all of it was poorly managed. The more sophisticated leaders from the right know all this but they don't discuss it. Instead, they use it to help perpetuate the right's irrational fear of socialism. I am learning that this country should probably do everything opposite of what your leaders are promoting. Maybe then we will get out of the messes we are in.
