My view is that it was the Dixiecrats that made it "work" to the extent that it worked.

I like this argument, Sam, but it's only half the picture. The other half is what everyone focuses on, the moderates in the Republican Party and their elimination by the very right wing types.

As the rep party moved right, Republicans in states like New York, New Jersey, Conn., etc., just couldn't get elected. Not too long ago, each state had serious representation in the Senate.
