I think the implication was apparent from the date of the announcement that they did not expect to make enough profit to claim the credit. GM (imo) is unlikely to survive in its present form - I think mgmt and union leadership probably know this and want to preserve as much payout for themselves as is possible. I am not sure why anyone would buy GM debt these days. Just my thinking.

Mish, here is the puzzle:

1) The Fed is not printing
2) Lots of housing-related debt is blowing up
3) Reconstructed M3 is growing faster and faster, now above 14%

It appears as the housing debt gets destroyed, new debt is created somewhere, but where?
