There was an interesting article in the NY Times magazine just the other week on these quants. They seem to program their strategies around the '3 standard deviation' chance of things occurring, which apparently 'almost never happens'. Of course when it does....

PS - Looks like one of the pioneering online trading brokerages is 'almost a goner'. Etrade was trading around 26 back in June and was under 4 today, with some question as to whether they will make it due to their mortgage exposure...

I think it's all these increasingly complex derivatives. Greenspan warned about the unregulated, barely understood derivatives market. I think we're beginning to reap the unwinding of that hard to quantify impact.
