FDR implemented socialist and/or fascist economic policies, but he didn't start the trend towards socialist thought in the US but rather responded to it. His ideas where popular, and not just because he was personally popular.

In a way I think FDR was one of our worst presidents. His leadership in WWII probably keeps him from the bottom of the list, as might the fact that we had some really poor presidents over our history, but he is hard to beat if your looking for disastrous economic policy.

Another pre-boomer problem was Korea and the failure of Congress to formally declare war.

We’ve continued to follow this pattern and it has undermined public support for our military actions ever since.

"The previous generation went soft."

That's a very astute observation, Goldworldnet. My Dad used to say that about FDR. He said we bent over for the Russians too, by giving them too much to aid their contribution to defeating Hitler.

I'm in the same generation as you, give or take a fractional decade. I am both amazed at what we've done and disgusted at what we've allowed.

We have gone soft on leftists and allowed them into our own government where they can really hurt us in the long run. They continue to make arguments that are only possible because of the sacrifices of our parents' generation, THE GREATEST GENERATION of all.
