I want to write my own "vows".
Because I could easily do it, and they'd say just what I feel.

I love this country, warts and all.

And as long as I live here, if we are invaded, I pledge my son and daughters and I and my husband will defend this country. I'd not be happy to die for it, but I'm willing to.

I spend my life working for the betterment of my community. I pledge to make my little slice of America a kinder, more fair, and more welcoming place.

No flag, no symbols of any kind, are great enough to represent this country. There are not even words great enough to adequately express my love for this country, where my ancestors (American Indian and European) have lived for generations. Just as I could never take a rote pledge and use it on my children or my husband, I could never use such a rote tool on this country. It means much more to me than that. I don't mind if other people say such pledges, as long as they don't use them to strike out at other citizens who may want to express their love differently.

The point of my post was that nationalism is a dangerous passion subject to manipulation and misuse by those with hidden agendas.

So are you against American patriotism and all displays thereof?
