Why pay for ads when you can just buy all of Etrade's customers at a discount? It's how I got into TD/Ameritrade.

I'd been an Ameritrade customer, was not happy with them, went with another online broker that was cheaper AND had better service. The name escapes me at the moment. Anyway, they were BOUGHT by Ameritrade, so I was back with Ameritrade, but the deal and service improved, so I stayed there. Then, they merged with TD Waterhouse and the research improved greatly.
