Do you think very few humans really do try to understand animals?

It seems to me that of all things, humans are most in touch with their pets- especially in this country. Even people I totally disagree with sometimes warm a corner of my heart for them because they go on and on about a dog or cat they've loved.

I think people don't always want to think about all kinds of animals (especially the kinds they eat), but I do think most people have empathy for at least some animals, and that they do see in animals that intelligence and energy they feel in themselves. I think people are often a lot more conscious of the intelligence of their animals than they are about the intelligence of people with whom they disagree.

And thank you for the lovely compliments. They made my day that much more enjoyable.
