If you know him that well, contact his parents and ask what is being done for the children...did he set up a college fund, etc. Ask the parents what HE wants done, and if he wants you to contribute to the fund at the bank, then that is his request, try to honor it.

I suggest that you just post the information about your classmate in such a way that it does not appear to be a solicitation.

SI might bounce you if you post it as a solicitation, and some people don't like it. Leave the door open for people to contact you privately if they want to know more.
