I am talking about gasoline consumption, not oil consumption. Oil is used in industrial production and you can't easily conserve, if you have a lot of manufacturing. European GDP is less services and more manufacturing than US GDP. Most European oil is used in industry and utilities.

Yes Black Swan pointed out my error in regards to oil vs gasolines consumption. I wonder if they are including diesel in the motor gasoline figures? (which is much more common in Europe than the US for personal vehicles..)

Per this site 68% of the oil consumed in the US is for transportation:

eia.doe.gov

I am sure the figures are less for Europe but I would be surprised if transportation only accounted for 27.5% of the oil consumption. (The figure I come up with given your information and the site I posted...)

France 260 liters 6.3 times less
Germany 403 .......4.0 times less
Italy 345 .......4.7 times less
Spain 243 .......6.7 times less
UK 436 .......3.8 times less

So, in western European countries, gasoline consumption was between 6.7 (Spain) and 3.8 (UK) times less than the US as of 2003.

KyrosL it looks as if the motor gasoline figures did not include diesel:

earthtrends.wri.org

It shows Spain as using more diesel per capita than the US.

I think for an accurate comparison we would need to look at how much oil overall is used in transportation per capita. The figures for diesel could be skewed by utility usage (Look at Luxembourg and Gibraltar..)

Kyrosl,

When you look at the mogas consumption per capita you also have to look at the population density. We use more mogas because things are further apart here in the USA. If you would all move to NJ you would use less gas!!!!

Best to all,

Kyros, you might take a look at pages 22 and 23 of this Simmons presentation. It is not the exact info you are looking for, but may be relevant.
