October details
Sales at general merchandise stores fell 0.1%.
Food sales rose 0.4% in October. Sales at health- and personal-care stores rose 0.2%.
Department stores saw their sales fall 0.5% in October.
Sales at furniture stores dropped 0.9%. Sales at appliance and electronics stores climbed 0.1%, the best performance in two months.
"Already the past three months have been grim in general [merchandise], furniture, electronics and clothing," said Ian Shepherdson of High Frequency Economics in an email. "The holiday season will be terrible."
Sales at hardware and garden stores rose 0.6%.
Sales at clothing stores rose 0.1%. Sales at music, book and sporting-goods stores fell 0.4%.
