I remember the Shah - I was a news hound at a young age. If you knew my family you'd know why <g>

The poverty issue existed then as well. None of the middle eastern countries (none may be too sweeping) have invested in infrastructure and their people except Kuwait. The result is poverty and poverty gives way to some ugly things. People will listen to anyone who they feel empathizes with their situation AND offers a path to hope. They've been brainwashed into believing we're the bad guy and we need to be destroyed before their lives can improve. I've got news for ya - in some cases we have been (if not the bad guy) very iffy on our middle eastern policy. There's nothing new about terrorism - it just hadn't happened here so we ignored it. We ignored it until it reached our shores - that was a mistake. The "can't happen here" mentality was wrong.

What happened in Iran is clear. The wealth coming into the country didn't trickle down which gave way to extreme religiosity that was misinterpreted and delivered in such a way that gave power to the Clerics who now dictate the direction of their Government.

I'd like to add one other thing. Terror is a matter of which side you're on. Imagine you and I, as Iraqi's, on a date in Downtown Baghdad. I'm feelin' good and got a few dinars in my pocket so I take you to a high class joint - Taco Bell of Baghdad. Suddenly we hear planes coming - they're American bombers. Of course they're coming to help us! Would you feel terror knowing their payload could start falling at any moment? I would! I'd say lets go now! If you didn't agree I'd hand you a couple dinars and you could eat your chalupa on your own!
