Harry Turtledove has a series of novels set in an alternate universe where the South manages to win the Civil War. That being the case, there was no reason for Booth to assassinate Lincoln. And that means he lives long enough to become disgusted with the Republicans and he becomes a Marxist...

Lincoln was our first gay Republican President. When (R)'s were the "progressives"! Today, Lincoln would certainly be a (D).
