You are assuming that the government would only be prepared to make the ownership of US-minted gold coins illegal. In that case, by Maple Leafs, Krugs, Pandas, or any other non-US minted coins.

If the government decides to make the ownership of gold coins illegal, I personally would not assume that the government would be quite so discriminating.
