Somebody named Kelly Pickerel, a singer from American Idol, appeared on "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" last night. She's a cute blonde and I'd never seen her before. I missed the intro, but I assume she's a country singer. If it turns out she is a soprano with an opera company, I will have to admit to being a cultural bigot. <G> At first, I thought she was doing the dumb blonde act. But it wasn't an act. Two questions stand out. "Is the piccolo a member of the woodwind, percussion or strings family?" Now, keep in mind, this woman is a professional singer and has probably sang before orchestras that contained piccolos. So, brilliant Kelly decided that it was percussion, because percussion and her last name both start with "p". I don't think she even knew what percussion meant. She copied the 5th graders answer and got it right through the back door. Then, the best question. "Budapest is the capital of which European country?" Kelly says, "I've never heard of such a thing. I thought Europe was a country. Well, I know that France is over there, but I don't think it's a country. Still, I'll guess France." This time she used her cheat and the 5th grader knew it was Hungary. The boy was looking at her like "what planet is she from?" Kelly says, "Hungary! There's a place called Hungary?" At the end, Jeff Foxworthy told her, "don't put yourself down, Kelly. You are not dumb." Hey, she's pretty and she can probably sing, but she is definitely dumb AND ignorant. I take back all the times I called Dubya ignorant. He is for normal standards, but there are obviously some very sub-normal people out there who make him sound like Stephen Hawking.
