CJ, > Then you tried to spin it that the Herbert was calling all states right advocates racists, when it was very clear he was only talking about that time and place.

Let's focus on this, since I think this is key. I may have gone over the line with my accusation that Herbert is calling all states rights advocates racists.

But it's clear to me that he wasn't just talking about that time and place. It's obvious that his whole goal is to trash the Reagan legacy, which he characterizes by bringing up all of the times Reagan opposed civil rights legislation. From his own column:

> Throughout his career, Reagan was wrong, insensitive and mean-spirited on civil rights and other issues important to black people. There is no way for the scribes of today to clean up that dismal record.

Wow, I guess guys like David Brooks and myself are desperately trying to "clean up that dismal record." That's not running away claiming victory? Why won't Bob Herbert even address anything David Brooks brings up?

Brooks says it best, "It’s spread by people who, before making one of the most heinous charges imaginable, couldn’t even take 10 minutes to look at the evidence. It posits that there was a master conspiracy to play on the alleged Klan-like prejudices of American voters, when there is no evidence of that conspiracy. And, of course, in a partisan age there are always people eager to believe this stuff."
