What was Lincoln's vision for the South beyond ending slavery" He wanted to bring the southern states back into the Union as quickly as possible. And he wasn't punitive. The Radical Republicans wanted to be much harsher. Okay. I knew about that.........I thought you were talking about something else as well. Great men know you don't punish adults like you would children. After Lincoln was assassinated, the state governments were dissolved and put under military rule. That was when words like "scalawag and "carpet bagger" entered the vocabulary. Yes, I know......Reconstruction did little to improve relations between the North and the South.
