For colon cancer the best screening strategy is probably a colonoscopy every 10 years starting at the age of 50 - that is if everything is normal and the person has no symptoms and no family history of colon cancer. If there are any doubts, the screening should be started earlier and done at closer intervals. "Virtual" colonoscopy is less invasive, but last I heard it is still not covered by insurers. Its sensitivity is thought to be close to that of a regular fiberoptic procedure. If there are any findings or doubts the person will still need a traditional fiberoptic study.

Oxford Health has a pretty good summary of current screening recommendations:

A colonoscopy is excellent insurance against a needless early death.

My doctor wanted me to get one and also a endoscopy on the same day. The funny thing is after being doped up they performed the colonoscopy first, which is the reverse of what I expected. I remember everything about the colonoscopy but have no memory whatsoever of what followed it.

I sincerely hope they wiped the probe down before shoving it down my throat.
