Does this technology have the capability eventually for big-screen HDTV screens?

If you consider how long it took to develop LCD screens of even 30" at a reasonable price and then compare with the current state of development of MEMS, it's a long, long period in the distant future. Maybe about 8 to 10 years, to be optimistic.

I base this view on how long it took Corning to develop a technology that would allow a large LCD screen free of blemishes. Even though the two technologies are vastly different, given the size of the human mind and the inventiveness of the human spirit, it does take time.

JGoren,

Re: scaling MEMS to TV screen size (eventually)

That was my impression from the New York Analyst presentations. I don't recall if it was Paul Jacobs or Len Lauer who mentioned scaling the size of MEMS screen eventually to TV screen dimensions. However, this is definitely not something we'll be seeing anytime soon i.e. within the next 5 years or so. Paul Heilman raised some concerns about the ability to achieve reasonably priced large MEMS screens due to silicon wafer constraints/cost. Ryhack
