I take it the love interest is the queen of hearts. you know you should tell some other story entirely about some gambler's quest for purpose in life whilst he looks up a long lost girlfriend who he thinks has been sending him subliminal messages from personal ads in field and stream that quote garcia lorca and all the while he is hiding from an international criminal organization (ducks unlimited) whilst he tours the canals and rivers of central USA. Gambling on riverboats is used not as a main exposition but as a metaphor for his empty, no end - no beginning existence. Finally our hero learns to add artificial significance to all the material things in his life as a symbol of the chaos of civilization. This allows him to ignore the ever looming ugly reality of their meaninglessness except as trappings of an industrially paranoid power game of the slave masters of the uber hive. EC<:-}
