"Why is it automatically presumed that McCain did it?"

Because that's what the dirty trickster WANTS people to assume.

That's the very reason that they planted a glancing positive reference to McCain in the telephone script... so they could "take out TWO opponents with one attack call"... Romney (taking the brunt of the attack call's charges), and McCain (who would be tarred in people's minds as the dirty trickster).

That's why BOTH McCain and Romney asked for a criminal investigation of these calls.

(Most obvious possibility is that it was someone 'associated' with Rudy's campaign --- his campaign has already engaged in a bit of underground attacks against Romney, perhaps as a way to prevent Mitt from emerging as a strong challenge to Rudy on his right, or perhaps simply because they regard Mitt as Rudy's strongest adversary, and this telemarketing attack company has done some work on behalf of Rudy's campaign previously... so that is probably where the suspicions will begin --- but I suppose it could actually be other candidate's campaign organizations that are behind it. Only getting these people on oath in a criminal investigation... and perhaps seizing their billing records, is likely to get to the bottom of it though....)

Fortunately though, with BOTH Mitt and McCain, AND several GOP politicians from the area formally pushing the A.G. of New Hampshire to get to the bottom of it... I'd wager that there is a good chance this information will actually be revealed.
