Early in his career, Frank Sinatra used to go to Count Basie's club to hear Joe Williams sing. Frank picked up a lot of his stage mannerisms from him. Until Frank came along white singers would stand there like a post, Frank was the first who moved. He got those moves from Joe Williams. He's a little past his prime here, in his prime there wasn't a better jazz voice.

They were before my time, but my mother had a lot of the old records...the 78s. That's really going back, whew.

Most people don't realize that Doris Day got her start singing with some of the old favorite bands.

Day was a star vocalist, most notably on hits like "Sentimental Journey" and "My Dreams Are Getting Better All the Time," both of which were monster hits for the band. "Sentimental Journey" also became especially popular among American soldiers stationed overseas during World War II. By the end of the war and her time with Les Brown, when she was barely into her 20s, Day was considered one of the top band vocalists in the world.
