"Do you equate equate America's business with the (mis)fortunes of Ford and GM ?"

No, and that is my point..... that singling out a financial institution with a good balance sheet, as you did, doesn't mean the economy is healthy. The same way that GM and Ford by themselves doesn't mean the economy is toast.

As for the big picture, one can point to all time high assets being larger than all time high debt, and some might conclude from this that we have never had a better economy. But that is simply taking a still snapshot of current assets vs. debt. I prefer to look at what is developing in our economy due to all time high assets being brought about by all time high debt AND LEVERAGE AND COMPLETE DISREGARD FOR RISK, and where that is going to lead us.

Now, I don't pretend to know exactly how it will play out, but I do know we are in uncharted territory, and it doesn't look like friendly territory.
