Wilbur Smith's best novel was one of his first. "The Sunbird." One of the best novels I have ever read. As good as his other stuff is, it doesn't compare, IMO.

Two books in one, THE SUNBIRD opens with an archaeological dig in Botswana, focusing on the complex personal and professional interactions of its South African sponsors and scientists. At the near-death of team leader Dr. Ben Kazin, the action abruptly switches to the final years of Opet, the first-century city Kazin has discovered. Thorne changes pace and tone seamlessly, employing subtle variations of emphasis and inflection. As the parallels between ancient and modern characters unfold, Smith's meticulous research offers insight into the history of the human condition.
