Just not supporting dictators would be a start. But we did support Saddam. We do support the Saudi royals. We did support Pinochet. The list is long enough.
The threat, if there ever was one, by al Qaeda has certainly been increased since the Iraq war started.

You have selective memory. I was for going after Osama and still am. I was against going after Saddam. Your assumption is incorrect. Dictators can be overturned with indirect US support to democratic groups within the particular country, something the US has not tried very hard to achieve.

Murderous criminals (Osama) should be eliminated by what ever means possible.
