There is never deflation, but inflation numbers get
drastically reduced by manipulating averaging and hedonics.
Overall, dishonesty in such matters eventually leads to the
loss of confidence in the currency, which tends to last a long
time. Once the credibility of the Fed and the data is lost,
it does not get restored overnight. Generally, this leads
to hoarding real stuff and more inflation, and we are seeing
some of that now.
