The southern gentry certainly existed, but most people were much poorer than those depicted in the story.

I began reading “Black Rednecks & White Liberals” by Thomas Sowell over the weekend. Sowell begins the book with the assertion that most differences in the North and South can be traced back to England and the separate populations that immigrated here. I’m anxious to read more, but so far he has painted a dismally backward portrait of Southern immigrants.
