Is her prime goal the presidency itself rather than a compelling policy or policies that she believes she is capable of furthering?

My answer to that is definitely yes but others here disagree. We had a good discussion on the candidates not long ago (last few days).

As for Iraq, I find Hillary able to stand on any side of the issue that looks politically expedient at the moment. That said, I think just about any Democratic president would wind down our presence over time and step up regional diplomacy. I think the Iraqi political scene is hopeless and bound to fall apart no matter what we do. I don't want our soldiers in Baghdad neighborhoods when it does. And if they are the only thing holding Baghdad together, the place is doomed in the long run anyway.

To the thread; I missed most of the discussion of the "Hillary as a candidate" discussion.

A quick answer, Ed. My overriding concern in the 08 elections is to see to it that the Republicans don't keep the presidency. Iktomi has encapsulated that as the supreme court. That works for me. Though I take it she means that as a metaphor. There are so many strains of proper protection of constitutional rights embodied in that wish that it hardly needs to be itemized.

So I'll take Clinton if she's the one who I conclude is most likely to defeat Giuliani/Romney/McCain et al.

With Clinton, however, the feeling I get is that she mixes and matches issues to create a voting plurality and if she has a heart-felt driving motive I haven't seen it.

With HRC, you have to read the tea leaves, since she seems determined to run a gaffe-free campaign, which necessitates saying as little substantive as possible.

While she does not inspire me, I think hers would be an admin based on rational choices and competent management.

I do not think she would ever order a preemptive invasion and I think she could repair the worst of our foreign relations debacles with a steady hand and a fair approach.

The next president has no good options in Iraq that I can see. I think she would tack more to the dovish side after winning the office.

I'm not convinced she would be our best choice for POTUS, but she'd be so much better than what we've seen the past eight years, that I'd be willing to give her the major benefit of the doubt.

What are your thoughts about her, Ed?
