IMO it's mostly a sleazy industry. I'm sure there are trial lawyers out there whose primary motivation it exposing criminals in corporate America, irresponsible and incompetent doctors etc... But I'm also sure there are investment bankers out there that are motivated to raise capital "at a fair price" for companies with legitimate prospects and stock brokers who are trying to get "their customers" rich while making their living. (LOL) To me, the real goal should be exposing and punishing the people responsible for "knowingly" making unsafe products, knowingly breaking existing product laws, knowingly engaging in unsafe/irresponsible medical practices etc... We have criminal laws that govern many of these things. Those that are responsible should be tossed in jail, lose their license to practice etc... One of the primary goals should not be to enrich victims, lawyers, state governments or even to maximize the settlement - especially when they go into it using biased expert witnesses, unproven science, emotional appeals to ignorant jurors etc... It should be about truth, fairness, and making the country safer and better. IMO, we have way too litigious a society and it accomplishes almost nothing other than raising the cost of insurance, products, health care, and often even transferring wealth away from innocent people etc... Plus, it's all passed on to the rest of us a cost of doing business. We should round up all these corrupt irresponsible executives, doctors, etc.. and put them in jail. There is no reason to try to drain insurance companies that simply pass on the costs anyway, destroy companies and their innocent employees, shareholders, and pension holders that had nothing to do with the the crimes etc...
