You would think the embarrassment would come to be a significant inhibitory issue for some of these guys. But having followed the evolution/creation debate for many years it is clear that some people just shrug it off.

On a completely different note regarding science, have you read any of the articles about Garrett Lisi and his attempts to unify physics with E8? Now that is a worthwhile scientific controversy, and it will be very interesting to see how it plays out. It would be really cool if he is correct. It reminds me of De Broglie's Phd thesis. You can download his prepub paper and read the whole thing. He has some really cool graphs that at least look conceptually interesting, compared to the way I learned the standard model alphabet soup.

Note that some significant physicists think he is on to something, while some others have called his work a joke or hoax. Good science soap opera in the making! He does do some unorthodox things in terms of interpretations of the math, but then you could have said the same of De Broglie's assumptions as well. If the results work and explain things, then we start looking at the math differently, and eventually accept the view. TWT.
