The Real Obama Generation?

and an interesting comment:

As a Gen X-er myself, I wholeheartedly concur with most of your points. Obama, to me, represents a far more pragmatic kind of progressivism. The poster above who calls him moderate/conservative I think misses the point.

The Baby Boom generation loves to fight the big ideological battles with righteous fervor. But in the end, the major problems facing our nation have not been solved. I think the Gen X-ers and Millenials have both grown up in the wreckage and decided that we'd rather be a little less righteous and a little more effective at actually solving problems and improving the situation.

But Obama, to me, is definitely a progressive in that, whatever his willingness to listen to all sides and adopt different solutions, his goals are clearly progressive -- universal health care, diplomacy instead of war, fairness and justice, public education, strengthening the economy for the working and middle class, improving the environment.

Even more fundamentally, I judge a politician more by who they're going to be accountable to than by what they say. Obama's funding and support are from the grassroots to a greater extent than anyone else out there, and that's who I expect will benefit from his administration -- not the rich and the powerful.
