In the historical case mentioned the difference in material wealth wasn't between being rich and being very rich. It was rather between borderline starvation (sometimes without the borderline part) and an adequate amount of food.

And its not just in Jamestown and Plymouth where you see such differences. Look at the starvation after farms where collectivized in the Soviet Union. Look at the problems caused by seizing farms in Zimbabwe. Those two are just off the top of my head, I'm sure I could provide a number of other examples if you want them.

When people can personally benefit from hard smart work, they work harder and smarter. When both your efforts and the results of those efforts are socialized poverty, even starvation is much more likely to result.
