I read it as 400,000 for securities and up to 100,000 cash for a total of 500,000. But if a melt down where to happen the securities more than likely would disappear and all you could claim is 100,000. Probably a mute point cause if things where ever to get that bad, I feel the SIPC would be in trouble also.

I could be mistaken, but doesn't the "insurance" apply to each named individual? In other words, if you have a joint account...isn't the insurance doubled?
