Excerpt - "There is no such thing as a free and open society where great matters of empire are concerned, and this is something no less true of the United States than any past imperial power. The people are never consulted on imperial matters, whether war, assassination, or overthrowing other governments, and they are, sadly, frequently deliberately misinformed about them, their own resources being used against them, just the latest examples being around the invasion of Iraq."

elmat,

My point was: subsidizing corn-based ethnanol, when compared to the true costs of the oil was a cheaper alternative.

I thought the knock against ethanol is not that it might be more expensive than oil in dollar terms, but that it might actually (when all inputs are taken into account) require more energy to produce than is gained by burning it. BWDIK?

But that corn is grown and processed using a lot of oil. So you're not comparing like with like. You need to see what making that alcohol would cost with your fully socially costed oil.
