RM, what's your perception as a consumer in the area where you live? I mean people on the street. I did this when I sued to return to Brazil during the 'Lost decade' in the mid-80's.

I'd return to Brazil and saw more old cars than new ones in a morning traffic jam. Then battered cars in Shopping Centers, meaning the people who had money were not changing their cars.

Then I'd chat with my dentist or with the taxi drivers... Friends who had stopped gym, swimming lessons for kids, or making simpler birthday parties for kids.... Or the ones who were selling the lot they had on the beach where they planned to build a beach house...

All that was my way of checking the pulse of the country's economy.

In the US, obviously it is not the ame story neither that easy to check the pulse of the economy but it can be done without referring to the published metrics...
