Americans want the war ended.

They want the war to be over, but polls don't show a majority for immediate withdrawal.

In any case we were talking about Nixon. Yes Americans wanted the Vietnam ware ended, but he did bring it to a close. You can argue he had no choice in the matter, but the war did end.

More generally even if Nixon wanted to, and managed to, keep the war going indefinitely, well continuing an unpopular policy doesn't amount to "betraying democracy".
