Dale;

That tells me who was really calling the tune since 1980

Interesting topic - but I am not convinced. What is the common thread from Reagan on in the party - christian fundamentalist. Reagan was sure no neocon. At least I would sure never label him so. He marched to the smaller government drumbeat that you mention, but Bush most definitely is not a smaller government guy. Look at the addition of a new cabinet - Homeland Security and the huge increase in government it created. Also to support this thinking, spending by Bush would embarrass even Clinton.

Look at where the fundamentalists stand after almost 20 years of having "their" preferred candidates in the White House; ready to split with the party and back their own nominee

Pure scare tactics IMO. It hasn't happened and is but a tool to get their preferred candidate as the nominee. One word highlights their power still - McCain.

Look at where the fundamentalists stand after almost 20 years of having "their" preferred candidates in the White House; ready to split with the party and back their own nominee perhaps, because almost no one will champion their purist agenda.

All these centuries after the Mayflower landed and the Puritans still have the same agenda.

Maybe they'll pack up again and go try someplace more hopeful, like Dubai.
