I have owned syndicate shares of several horses. I had one who finished second 8 times before she broke her maiden, but she made money. And another low priced claimer who fed himself and dropped a couple of bucks into my hands. The trick is to not overpay. Most syndicates are suckering people into buying potential stakes horses. If it works, you make big bucks. But the starting price is usually too high for it to work. If your syndicate claims a horse who is finishing in the money regularly at a certain class, the profits are small but steady.
