Leaving everyone to define "self interest" for themselves will lead to a free for all. That's why I proposed education. It's easier to persuade people with negative tendencies that that being collaborative is in their best interest than that being collaborative is good or noble or nice or some such mushy, altruistic thing. Self interest is something they already can relate to. If you have some better way to persuade them to behave the way you'd like, I'd like to hear it. If not, I suggest you disabuse yourself of the notion that self interest is greed--a negative.
