<<<I have a cousin whose poodle is having digestive problems. My cousin is on SSI and Medicaid and just received a $7K grant to replace her windows and her kitchen. She cannot afford the treatment the vet recommended....

My cousin's POV is that, since having pets is healthy for people, someone should pay for her pet's treatment just as they pay for her own.

Just a little anecdote to illustrate the slippery slope of the welfare mind set...>>>

No matter the system, people will define self interest differently. On the other hand Dennis Kowslowski, Jeff Skilling, Bernie Ebbers and others believe people are picking on them when the only crime they are guilty of is doing stuff legally in their own interest.

Your cousin, Jeff, Dennis, et al, I believe, have a very strong case (I am not implying that your cousin is a criminal). They were all doing what they thought should be legal - promoting their own self interest.

Life is very complicated. Language is in early stages of development. The english language in it's current form is only several hundred years old.

We all basically know the definition of self interest, but when you come down to it - there will be endless difference in its interpretation.

I am not saying what you mean by self interest is wrong. I just think there is hardly anywhere near universal understanding. Even if you could get 5% of the US population to agree with you, you could start a philosophical concept with a greater following than Ayn Rand.
