In case you've been asleep for the past 15 years, old-style liberalism has changed a lot, in very positive ways. We are progressives and centrists now, and we are for efficient, pay-as-we-go conservative (yes conservative) government, that is conserving our resources and values of our Founding Fathers and not wasting, damaging and squandering them. We are for fairness, justice, truth, fighting corruption, true democracy (every vote needs to count), equality, balances of power, forward-looking preparation and saving for rainy days. The only thing we are truly liberal about is every American's right to free speech, and not being unfairly persecuted or descriminated against. We are against terrorism and illegal immigration, but we are not for demonizing entire races and religions. After all, we have seen how evil and religious right "Christians" can be, and how crazy they are so we don't judge entire religions and we have more faith in people. The rightwing does not though. The rightwing assumes people are bad and corporations good. We do not see it that way. So conservatives are no longer conservative and liberals are no longer so liberal. For instance, progressives are for tighter regulation on the most dangerous out-of-control industries and monopolies. We are for cracking down on corporate crime, pollution and socking it to the worker class. While we applaud those who get rich honestly, and strive to join them, we very much reject the idea that CEO's, huge corporations and industry should be able to do anything they want regardless of whether it hurts the country, consumers, tax-payers and the environment. We are also not for needless aggressive wars, especially unilateral ones without international help, that is unless it's absolutely necessary. So all the good things conservatism used to stand for can now be attributed more to progressives, like being honest and law-abiding for instance. WHile today's rightwing has lost sight of Goldwater conservative ideals and are for an imperial government, imperial corporations and themselves being above the law and above traditional moral standards.
