People go to malls not just to shop. Movies are a big draw in the evening. Teens congregate there to hang out. People go there to dine or just get out of the house.

People may be buying (after all we're not in a depression - yet) but very cautiously and hunting for great bargains. I don't remember seeing such a shaky US economy since the post Vietnam era and when OPEC made its power move, which unfortunately for Jimmy Carter happened during his term, though he inherited most of the situation. Stagflation may be upon us again now, and the recession certainly is. Plus, the average American has 70% of his savings in his home and home prices have been coming down for a year, and now the stock market is following suit. That's a double whammy. Add to that expensive health care, energy and college tuitions/loans and that's a quintuple whammy.
