Becoming independent from oil is also a top priority in my mind. Certainly it should be. But lets face it, the US is probably the among the least attacked countries, by military or terrorists, of any countries in the last 100 years. Or paranoia is misplaced. And our forces attacking others overseas doesn't help homeland security.I also figure it's good to get the government out of micromanaging the economy. Taxes ought to be restructured toward that aim, i.e. a flat tax with little to no deductions. A European style VAT may make sense; I'm not sure. But you have to get beyond the federal income tax in your thinking. There are so many taxes with winners and losers on the state and local level, that are multiple level taxes. You buy a glass of wine at a restaurant, you are paying their property taxes, their business license fees, their road impact fees, the alcohol excise taxes, import tariffs, sales tax, the excise taxes on over-the-road truck that delivered the wine.... At the end of it, federal income tax is probably the least onerous. You can see where government social programs fall on my list of priorities. If that makes me a selfish American, so be it. So be it.I am also shifting these days away from my old support for neoconservatism. Let's trade with and compete against other nations, not remake them in our image. Hear hear. All the Pres before the Neo's, Reps and Dems, did an OK job of shifting the world towards Democracy by setting an example. I can only compliment you on your wisdom of opposing the war, and calling for our withdrawal.
