You said it yourself. We can't cut spending that quickly. (Or we could, but then you'd have a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth.)

You could raise taxes now, but given that we're in a shaky economy right now, that wouldn't be the smartest move, even if you tried to only raise taxes on the "rich."

Gradual is the way to get back into the black. After that, fierce fiscal discipline is required to stay there. I don't want to hear yet another "Oh happy day" speech from Congress once the budget is balanced, cause I already heard that before in 1999.
