"Harvard trained atmospheric physicist and the Alfred P. Sloan Professor of Meteorology"

Sorry, doesn't mean squat if they are not interested in the real science.

Ah, a Harvard trained atmospheric physicist and MIT professor of meteorology isn't "interested in the real science".

You guys are hilarious.

Scientists can be politically motivated just like anyone else, and can use their reputations as a weapon against those who are incapable of using their brains.

Is this news to you?

No, its what I've been complaining about.

I googled a bit for my favorite counterexample but could not find it. There was a very famous lecture given by a prof of some Ivy league US school (engineering or physics dept) just days or weeks prior to Sputnik, "proving" that orbital flight could not be achieved with chemical rockets. Either MIT or Columbia I think. Ouch!
