ElM, I too learned at a young age - don't be poor. I worked flat out to avoid it, spending little, saving fast and investing. It was before my time, but the Great Depression loomed large just the same since my parents were young when it arrived. I got frugality with my mother's milk.

One feels comfortable with a second hand Lada when everyone else picks up their children with a BMW, Audi or Mercedes when used to being frugal. The capital value of my car was less than their insurance premiums. I thought the children would do well to experience Ladaland, though we could afford a swanky car [and had a Mitsubishi Chariot as well].
