This professor wants to ignore the oldest marital tradition - it's between a man and a woman. Except in the states with civil unions, you can't put a person with the same gender as you down as your spouse, and if you did you'd probably have to provide your "civil union" certificate. Also, a while back I happened to look up common-law marriage, which I guess would be the equivalent of declaring a marriage without benefit of state approval, and few states recognize them anymore. In those states that do, you have to go through the courts to get divorced just like those with a marriage license.

Some companies require a marriage certificate copy for employees to insure their spouses.
