That's odd considering Japan went into a recession in 1991.

I guess your son lacked the knowledge, experience and savvy to find a job in the U.S. Or he just didn't want a job here...

Probably a good thing for him to do and it probably gave him some good experience. However, to say that he HAD to go to Japan to get a job is ridiculous. Maybe he was just trying to get as far away from home as he could. That is certainly understandable.
